Northern Farmer Connections
We invite you to join us to lend a hand, take in a farm tour, share knowledge of our Peace Community Food Hub concept, and in the process we hope to gather some valuable information from any interested producers. This is a great opportunity for landowners who may like to start their own Market Garden or Northern Orchard and existing producers who would like to expand or diversify their production with an established market for sales in the Peace. We will have information about Northern Co-Hort membership and how to get involved on site. Click here to learn more about and sign up for your Northern Co-Hort membership today.
The Northern Environmental Action Team (NEAT) has been supporting farmers through our Northern Co-Hort program since fall 2018. It is our goal to see food security achieved in the Peace Region. The Northern Co-Hort has connected a community of farmers interested in diversifying their farm products to support a community of food consumers in the north. The Eco-Tactics Report conducted by the PRRD in 2017 recognized the potential for diversifying agricultural products, identifying a lack of overarching institutional support. More recently, the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture funded a series of food hub feasibility studies, which mainly took place across the lower mainland to support farm businesses and food entrepreneurs. Drawing on our previous work and our community of farmers and ranchers, the Northern Co-Hort has undertaken the creation of a food hub tailored to the needs of producers in the Peace Region and across the north.
Strategy
We are working with Strategies North to conduct research around the feasibility of this Food Hub concept. Our vision for a food secure north cannot take place without input from you – our producers! The Peace Region is unique and holds a wealth of farming knowledge and agricultural capacity. We are excited about hearing from a group of innovators willing to explore creative solutions to develop food security for our northern communities. Your answers will guide us through determining the feasibility of building a food hub for the region.
