Encana Events Centre (EEC) in Dawson Creek is a great example of a company that went the extra mile to reduce the waste that goes to the landfill. According to TerraCycle, billions of cigarette butts go to the landfill, or even worse, end up thrown on the ground. Encana Events Centre decided to divert the cigarette butts they collect from their patrons.
Brent Hodson, Marketing and Interactive Manager for EEC, saw a note about recycling cigarette waste on the side of a cigarette package. He decided that since they collect cigarette butts in their designated smoking areas anyway, it wouldn’t be a big adjustment to recycle them instead of throwing them away. They decided to start the program in 2016. Patrons never knew the difference.
Brent contacted Terracycle, an innovative recycling company that looks at other products that you wouldn’t normally recycle. They have a cigarette waste program, Brita filter recycling, e-waste recycling, plus a Zero Waste Box system where you can recycle cleaning supplies, office supplies, safety equipment and much more! Brent said that it was easy to set up. The staff collects the materials, puts them into a box and they are shipped to a factory out east. Terracycle pays for the shipping. For each pound of materials they ship, they will receive $1 to donate to the charity of their choice.
I asked Brent if he would recommend that other businesses participate in this and he said that the program is great – there is not a lot of work to do to participate in it and if you are already collecting the waste, then you can easily participate. The waste is turned into recycled plastic that is used for industrial products like plastic pallets and Terracycle rewards you for participating. It’s really a win-win program for public venues.
Thank you Encana Events Centre for taking that next step and making a difference.
