Karen moved to Fort St John in the November 2007 and has explored much of the city on foot, children in tow. Growing up in South Western Ontario, she feels that recycling, composting and water conservation are part of our responsibility to provide a better environment for the next generation. But maybe more importantly, it’s the simple everyday choices that really tip the scale. Packing a garbage-less lunch, cleaning with vinegar or committing to cloth diapers are all easy choices to make and stick to and they truly make a difference. The opportunity to join NEAT and put her eco-conscience to good use was fabulous. It makes her happy when her kids ask if they can feed the worms (our indoor composter) or if they can recycle their granola bar wrapper. She enjoys passing that excitement along.

Karen went to Trent University in Peterborough Ontario, where there are 3 recycling bins for every garbage can. In between sorting her paper & plastics, she got a BAHons in International Development Studies and Cultural Anthropology. (If you know what that means, call her, she wants to do lunch!)

Compost Workshops

In celebration of Compost Awareness Week - May 7-13, 2012 - NEAT is hosting a series of compost workshops. Although it's a little early to be getting into the garden, those itching to encourage spring along, would still benefit from compost information.

Workshops are being held:...

Have you ever had that "ah-ha" moment when you realize that for all the complications in life, it's often the simple solutions that work the best?

Kim Eglinski, owner of Boondocks Gifts in Fort Nelson has been making simple choices for the environment for years and has...

Dish Detergents Decoded!

We had a question this week about petroleum based dish detergents, which sent me scouring the Internet! (No pun intended.) It took me a while, but I've got the answer and here it is:

All types of dish detergents use ingredients known as surfactants which help oil and water...

Not Your Mother's Cloth Diapers

I certainly didn't set out to be one of "those" mums that used cloth diapers. But when my son showed up we were given a set of second-hand diapers  and we were so poor that they quickly became a means to an end!

Cloth diapers have changed a lot over the past...

10 Things You Might Not Know About Composting

Composting is a great thing to do for the environment, but there's still a lot of misconceptions about how to go about doing it. So, in continuing with Compost Awareness Week, here are ten things that you might not know about composting.

1. Hair is 100% compostable! Whether it...

Stoop, Scoop & Conquer!

As the snow melts, I am confronted with the daunting (and disgusting) task of cleaning up a whole backyard full of double doggie doo-doo before the kids track it in!
Now I must admit that I hate stoop and scooping as much as the next person, but the fact that I was throwing out...

The Smells of Spring

When we began talking about how to acknowledge Earth Day in our communities, and decided to give something up, however small, that will benefit the earth, I knew the time had come. The weather was cooperating, so I had no excuse.

For me, being able to use my clothesline is one...

Modern Day Hero

It’s not very often you get to meet a true pioneer, someone that has rejected the status quo and spent their lives working to make things right. If you are lucky, you might meet one or two in your entire lifetime.  With many of these meetings, I doubt we truly ever grasp the...
